The problem that many people face is the absence of actual serial ports on many currently available computers. This tendency to remove the hardware interfaces historically used to feed PPS signals to commonly available computers began way back in the 1990s where a powerful OS vendor actively began encouraging this change. Hence my suggestions for how the time synchronization community could (belatedly) adapt to the absence of those interfaces and seek ways to get the precise time data into such "legacy-free" computers. Now, there are still computers with input pins that can efficiently convey a traditional PPS signal to ntp software, but they are no longer the general majority of fast commodity computers. Most computers have spare slots, so why not buy a serial card and use that ?. Not expensive either, especially if s/hand. USB never was designed for real time work and trying to use it for such is always going to be hard work and a compromise...
