I think wav like you say above would be best as it allows differentiation
between parties.
I don't think the wasteful aspect of this really matters if it's running
on a PC and disk space is cheap.
If it was on an embedded platform then maybe use one channel and GSM?
As far as the implementation, could you not just add a second lot of
filters?
