This is related to quvi, so I hope you don't mind me dropping a line
here. Quvi provides a very specific set of features which doesn't
include things like browsing, searching or getting more metadata from
online sources.

For GNOME Videos (originally Totem), we use the Grilo framework for
this, and it recently added Lua support. So, to give an example that
relates to my recent work on the BBC iPlayer, we'd implement browsing
and searching in Grilo, with the final step, grabbing the URL for
playback, being provided by quvi.

I hope we'll see more work on source in Grilo and the equivalent work in
quvi in the future.
