Hey, thanks for recommending asio4all, that seems to have fixed the latency issues. I used Steinberg's (which I didn't even realize I had) but asio4alls eems to work much better. It took some monkeying around in the control panel to get my other sound dvice selected, but things seem to have worked out.
btw, asio mutes other sound, so I have to use a metronome sound from a vst instrument. Does anyone have a more graceful solution to getting a metronome going without having to load a whole vst just for that? It seems rather wasteful, though it does work.
