Thanks for responding. Windows saw the driver...
I'm using XP.
Now for the good news. I forged ahead last night and
re-installed a driver, and got it right this time.
The difference?
The driver on the CD that came with the machine is too old,
so Windows doesn't want to install it.
The updated driver, version 3.1.2.3 on Yamaha's site, is the
one that gave me trouble.
So I installed an older version of the driver, version 3.1.2.2,
and now it's working!!!
