Thanks very much. This is exactly what I wanted.
I needed to know how to tie up the data from my datasheet to the instrument
file definition,
and that is exactly what you explained. I still have your article,
so I understand the layout of the file, but I didn't know what from my
datasheet to use
in which column, and I knew you had to do something with the
msb and lsb, but didn't know what.
I'm going to get to work on this right away!

The channel info is mostly for things that can play on a specific
channel --
there is no accommodation for things that play on a range of channels but
not all of them, (which can cause huge patch lists for some older gear
like
the Roland D/MT series) but if you want the patches to be accessed for all
channels except for ones you specify (like channel 10 for drum maps) then
use -1 for this entry.
I made a post a while back here on using Excel and Notepad to do this --
if
you can't find it I'll try to dig it up again.
So your first column is probably going to be a -1 unless it's a drum
program, which will be 10.
On your four part list from the manual discard the first column -- you
don't
need the internal patch numbers for anything in particular. Your second
column is the MIDI program change number. Your third column is the MSB
times
the LSB. The fourth column is the patch name. These are all separated by
commas -- don't use commas anywhere else.
Open one of the existing patch maps and look at how it's set up for info.

Okay, am not getting any Yamaha DGX-640 instrument definition file, so I'm
happy to make my own, but I need info please.
From what I understand there are four columns of info:
the first one is the MIDI channel,
the second one is the patch number,
the third one is the bank,
the fourth one is the patch name.
Firstly, the term "midi chanel" is confusing to me, because I associate
that
term with the midi send and receive chanels, and obviously a certain patch
could be played on any of the 16 channels.
Secondly, here;s the data sheet layout from my DGX-640. It has columns:
Col 1: voice no (running sequentially up from 1 to 535), col 2: msb, col
3:
lsb, col 4: midi program change number, col 5: voice name.
How do I use the above data to arrive at the info for the
4 columns in the instrument definition file?
PLEASE HELP! I receently got the new piano, and cannot access its great
sounds via the standard xg template.
