You'll need MIDIYoke or another virtual MIDI cable for this, but the
freeware Proteus VX is a good software synth without latency problems. I
also have a QWX INF file I created for it, too. (It only uses one bank
change command, so it can be a bit confusing to set up with an INF file if
you're expecting the MSB/LSB pair for bank designations)
Latency is also a function of your OS, as some operating systems have more
latency than others. If you're running XP or earlier then BassMIDI is a good
option, and you can download free sound fonts to your heart's content.
You'll also want Viena to build your sound font banks, which is also
freeware and fairly blind accessible.
