Hi Joe and all,

I have used Komplete Kontrol instruments through QWS and VST Host and it worked fairly well. There is, as has been suggested, a fair bit of setup to do and I'm sure there could be several optimisations.

Joe, you mentioned you found the article on using VST instruments hard to follow. Have you also discovered the podcast version? It's on the Audio Downloads page:
http://www.andrelouis.com/qws/dlaudio.htm
This actually walks you through and demonstrates the process.
In the demo, I use two VST instruments, one is Kontakt.
There are all sorts of ways to route things these days, some prefer Reaper, some Logic, some QWS - it's good we have this variety.

I trust this helps.

God bless,

James.

I'm partial to driver level sound font players like BassMIDI, because that way I can replace laggy low quality OS synths.

You can get a plug-in now that solves the sound font issue to some degree on the Mac. It’s called Juicy SF plug-in, end it runs in VST and AU format.  There are some slight bugs with it, as it is a new plug-in; for example, it doesn’t quite handle cut off, resonance, and ADSR messages properly, but it uses the same engine as Synth Font, and it gets the job done when you need it.  There is a slight accessibility problem, but I found out that by going to the far side of the plug-in window moving my mouse down slightly and clicking, I am able to load sound fonts; once I’ve done that, I save them as Logic presets.  I have copies of this plug-in installer for Mac and windows if anybody is interested, as the website is a bit goofy to navigate.

Thanks for that, I love QWS, but also love Komplete and wish the two could get along. I do not like reaper so much. It's a great program... just... I got so much more done before. So I'm gonna try that!!!

I relate to this entire e-mail in a serious way. I think one of the reasons I stopped composing so much was because I bought into the Logic / Reaper / Komplete / fancypants newfangled musical stuff™ scene. And it has its place; Komplete is seriously amazing. But I still fly around QWS and hesitantly walk around Reaper (at least for MIDI editing). One thing you can do is define QWS as an external editor for MIDI files and have it use a loopback device routed to Reaper by default. In conjunction with the setting that automatically arms tracks as you select them, you could then have QWS send the output back into Reaper automatically, so you kind of get the best of both worlds. I think the only disadvantage to this method is that tempo information doesn't get included in MIDI takes. And speaking of takes, the default ctrl+e action in Reaper is to open a *copy* of an item in the external editor, so once you save that item and close QWS, you'll have a second take in Reaper. It's like version control for your music. I've only just started to play with this as an option for MIDI editing, so I may make other good or bad discoveries along the way.

Tbh the articles on using VST Host with qWS are relevant, but not

I don't have Komplete, but I still use Reaper a lot. What I do these

days is to use Reaper instead of VSt Host. I personally find Reaper

more stable and easier for me to tweak sounds with, and it eases

Reaper's learning curve a bit. I still use QWS to sequence with vsts.

Komplete lovers will probably hate me, but I'm still in that

transition phase. I've been in that for years because I find Reaper

too daunting to get used to sequencing with it. I"m slowly trying and

learning some tricks, but I'm so much faster with QWS it's not even

funny.

Granted Seth is very much right that once you start doing anything

serious with a bunch of vsts, you're going to want to do it in Reaper

as much as you can. I have personal experience with the pain of

routing through virtual midi cables and using QWS. It can certainly

be done, but gets annoying to say the least.

Oh, and the KK packages vary depending on which one you get. I

believe the smallest one offers a few pianos and synthesizers, while

the largest one, Komplete CE offers the entire gamut, from pianos

and synthesizers, to drums, guitar, basses, orchestral instruments,

etc.  now that I’m thinking about it, you could probably make KK

work with QWS, though you would have to use a virtual midi loop

cable such as Midi Yolk or Loopbe1. You won’t need VST host though,

as KK has its own standalone application.  However, using it that

way seems like it would be extremely complicated, as you would have

to do things with instances and all sorts of other goofiness in

order to make it all work.  The best way to use KK is to use it in

reaper or logic, as those programs have built-in support for KK.  Of course, if anybody else knows more about using it with QWS, please chime in.

Hi, Seth,

The instrument is a Medeli sp-4200. Believe it or not, the MIDI

implementation chart shows that controler 122 is crossed out.

What do these "complete packages" offer? Do they avoid Loopmidi and Vsthost?

What do they cost?

God bless you as well.

As far as virtual instruments go, your best bet is going to be to

purchase one of the Komplete packages, and a A49 or S49 controller

from Native Instruments so you can access the parameters.  There

are several versions of the Komplete package, some of which only

have a few instruments while others have literally hundreds of

instruments.  I currently own Komplete

12 CE, and I’m looking at upgrading to 13. This package is amazing!

There are so many instruments I haven’t even gotten a chance to

work with all of them.

Good morning,

The new music keyboard is very nice and at a cost of only $500. The

problem is that it does not have thie ability to turn off Local.

Some of its 600 sounds are very good but, under the circumstances, useless.

For this reason I am forced to obtain  virtual sounds.

I foun d an article on the QWS site which discusses Loopmidi and Vsthost.

The instructions for using these programs to set up virtual

instruments are rather brief and assume more knowledge than I possess.

I'm supposed to tell Loopmidi what ports I plan to use. Well, I

figure to select Proteus VX as my sound bank, but do I use that as the port name?

I'm supposed to open Vsthost in Wave. Well, the closest I can find

is Use Bank.

I believe I was able to delete the Input port in QWS. That is as

far as I could get.

I will appreciate any help you ncan offer as to how to move forward

successfully with my search for virtual instruments.

I thank you very much for your help.
