It only happens if your bash is old enough. I get the rubin:~/> for f in ; do echo $f ; done bash: syntax error near unexpected token `;' rubin:~/>help GNU bash, version 2.05.0(1)-release (sparc-sun-solaris2.9) for f in ; do echo $f ; done but not on Linux boxes with bash 3.x.
