Is there a precompiled R binary optimised for the PowerPC G5, i.e. compiled with compiler-level tuning for G5 specific features? Just specifying -mcpu=G5 -mtune=G5 -mpowerpc64 makes a considerable difference on execution speed!
it is *awfully* easy to just build r-base from the fink bits...
