On my leopard, it is in /usr/texbin (as seen above) and

        Sys.setenv( PATH=paste(Sys.getenv("PATH"),"usr/texbin",sep=":") )

allows
        system("xdvi")

and

        system("kpsewhich --help")

to succeed.
