I have 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04, R version 3.0.1.
More likely, however, is that your problem is just really big: if you need two copies of the allocated vector, your already in trouble, regardless of everything else you're doing. You might need to look at some of the big memory specialized packages off the CRAN HPC task view.
I really don't understand the area under which my problem falls, but reading through that list, the only package I can see that might help is bigmemory.
