The initial reason I was trying to access the manual was to get at http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/R-lang.html#Indexing (as specified on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1169456/in-r-what-is-the-difference- between-the-and-notations-for-accessing-the).
