In the mean time, communication has continued a bit at the bugzilla bug tracker (https://bugs.r-project.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=17311 ), and as you can read there, the bug is fixed now, also thanks to an initial patch proposal by Hannes Mühleisen.
