dear Ripley and Diffort, thank you for the quick reply. I figured out it was my mistake: I wrote this to the list:
contour(x,x,d2) in fact my framework I used contour(x,x,d2,labex=0) # that produced the error then I learned by myself that if I want to suppress labels I have to use contour(x,x,d2,drawlabel=F) and everything works fine now.
