I've submitted a posting to the NY Times blog mentioned by David Smith, specifically mentioning John, Rick and Allan. (Now awaiting moderation.)
Of course there are many others deserving credit but far to numerous to list so I didn't get started.

Is anyone in the leadership of the R-project going to contact the New York Times and clarify that the article gave remarkably short shrift to the people who designed the user interface for R, to a large extent AT&T researchers from an earlier generation? It would be the appropriate thing to do.
