Thank you, Duncan! You are right-as-rain: I forgot to change the aliases.
A single change from \alias{STUFF} to \alias{newSTUFF} in the
newSTUFF-package.Rd file did the trick.

file. I'm guessing from your description that you changed the filename
but didn't edit the alias to match.
