David, you raise an interesting point. However, my wife reminds me that another reason to consider the use of the kangaroo is the popular story that the origin of the word, far from being the name of the animal, is the local dialect for "I don't know".
The OED notes this origin in passing, along with a disclaimer that there is no evidence to support it.
