Where did you set LD_LIBRARY_PATH? If in one of your shell config files, it is likely that it is being stepped on during your login and thus not being seen within the R session. I had this problem previously and set the variable in /etc/ld.so.conf (though I am using RODBC instead). Edit that file (as root), add the path: /opt/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/client/lib and then run [/sbin/]ldconfig to update the current settings. Be sure also that $ORACLE_HOME is set to /opt/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/client Then try to load ROracle in a new R session.
