Dear colleagues,
Last days to register!
Transmitting Science is offering a new edition of the online course
“Evaluating and Validating Species Distribution Models with R”, which
will take place very soon, starting on December 1st.
Dates and schedule: live online sessions on December 1st and 3rd, 2025,
from 10:00 to 14:00 (Madrid time zone).
Course webpage:
https://www.transmittingscience.com/courses/ecology/evaluating-and-validating-species-distribution-models-with-r/
The aim of this course is to introduce participants to evaluation and
validation methods for species distribution models (SDMs) using R. The
course will cover a wide range of model-evaluation metrics
(discrimination, classification, explanatory power, calibration), and
validation methods, including spatial block cross-validation outside the
training area.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Understand how to assess SDM performance beyond simple metrics like
AUC and TSS.
• Compute a wide variety of metrics in R and apply them to species with
different ecological and biogeographical traits.
• Perform validation of models using spatial blocks and interpret
reliability and calibration of predictions.
• Navigate workflows in R tailored to SDM validation and evaluation.
Instruction will combine lectures, code demonstration and practical
exercises in R. Language of instruction: English.
