The R project has been selected again this year to participate in the
Google Summer of Code.
There are many excellent R project proposals here:

Where potential participants can look at the proposals and start
communicating with project mentors.
The one most directly linked to R in Finance is the TradeAnalytics proposal:

Interested parties should consult the R-Wiki, and potentially join the
GSOC-R mailing list.
Please let interested students and faculty know that R is again
participating in GSOC, so that we get lots of good student applications.
