We could try SimpleITK, which implements ITK for being used within python. Luis also mentioned the current efforts to have SimpleITK from within R: http://www.itk.org/SimpleITKDoxygen/html/Wrapping.html Considering SimpleITK works nicely within python, perhaps package rpy2 could also be a way.
