Thank you for your response,
I dont think this does what I need, or I am interpreting this the wrong
way.

In terms of a normal plot, what I need is say:

x=rnorm(100)
plot(x,frame.plot=FALSE)

instead of  simply

plot(x)

Perhaps a simple example for the spplot case...?
