Thanks, Kjell. I have committed similar changes to R-devel and it now  
compiles on Intel Macs pretty much out of the box with the GNU build  
of gcc4. The Intel compilers are almost there, save for a few bugs  
that have been reported. As of performance, don't hold your breath,  
Core Duo is fast for daily use, but not particularly good at  
computing like BLAS.
