Thank you, Simon. You were exactly right. I installed Xcode 2.5,
cleaned everything out & re-built libtiff and rtiff, and all works
perfectly.
Now I feel better :-)

Likely the latter - your Xcode is too old. Current Xcode for 10.4 is
Xcode 2.5 and the last releases of R for 10.4 required at least Xcode
2.4.1.
