Is building R from source 'a lot of work'? If you think so, I wonder what you would call the amount of work the developers do to bring you R ... and how you have shown your appreciation for that work.

On a Mac the Aqua Tcl/Tk 8.5 is a lot nicer (it was 8.5 that got the ttk widget set), but it is pretty much incompatible with R.app. (The X11 widgets on my Mac look much uglier than on my Linux desktop, for example.)

Well, there is no 'TclTk 8.6' yet (it's a beta), but 8.5.9 worked last
time I tried.  However, you will have to build R to use it, and use
(command-line) R and not R.app (the GUI).
