This is why my daughter cut all the tags off her beanie babies - she wanted
to be sure no one (i.e. her cash-strapped mother) tried to sell them when
they were a hot commodity raking in ridiculous amounts of money. We had a
guy offer $100 for a crab she owns. When we got home she immediately snipped
off the paper and cloth tags from all her stuffed animals.

I agree completely about the Catch-22.  As if one could tell a child, 
"No, you can't play with it.  It's not a toy, it's an INVESTMENT!"
