"Fear of a Shiny Planet"?
Paolo Bacigalupi's been there for a while: See "Calorie Man" / "Yellow-Card
Man", "The Fluted Girls", and "The Tamarisk Hunter." ("People of Sand and
Slag", too, maybe? Haven't read it but sounds that way from the synopses
I've heard.) Going farther back: "The Last Castle" springs to mind; *Logan's
Run*, arguably, and Kate Wilhelm's *Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang*. It's
usually classed as fantasy, but that's also what's going on in
Crowley's *Little,
Big*, as well as in his more SF'nal early novels *Beasts* and *Engine Summer
*. Not even thinking about the post-apocalyptic strains, here -- just
looking at decay.
What seems to me to be new here is the positivist spin on neo-luddism, and
that it's coming from established writers in The Genre. That take has
typically been the province of counter-cultural writers we don't normally
think of as being part of The Genre.
