Vance is a marvelous model for me.  All it took for me was ONE of his 
lines in a story of his, Morreion, in which Xexamedes the archveult is 
answering his interrogators:

"I come, I go, I savor the sweet airs of Earth."

With that single line, Vance taught me to forget about genres and write, 
just write.
