We had a terrific meeting tonight, with about twenty people in attendance. Vivian Vande Velde, popular Rochester fantasy writer, winner of an Edgar award, and founder of the Rochester Children's Book Festival gave a fascinating talk about herself and her work, including large posters of cover art. The cover on the French edition of Companions of the Night, featuring a beheaded teddy bear, was particularly memorable, as was her persistence. Her first book was rejected by thirty-two publishers, but the thirty-third published it and she was on her way. The kids in the group asked her some terrific questions. We have thoughtful readers growing up in R-SPEC and I am quite proud of them.
The anthology is coming along. We're waiting for a contract to arrive from the publisher and looking at November launch dates. Our October meeting is going to be featuring Alex White, also known as Boldo, of Boldo's Armory. He has studied English History and Literature formally and is famous for his hand-crafted helmets, which he sells for jousting and sword-fighting. Alex is going to discuss with us world-building in Medieval European Fantasy and how to get the details right. In November, our own Gabriel Prajitura is going to lead a discussion on not Science Fiction, but Fiction in Science - real-life science fraud. Some of his stories are quite amazing, particularly because they are true! Barnes and Noble has asked us not to conduct a meeting there in December, as they are particularly busy then.
