The Strugatsky brothers have a very nice novel -- translated title in English typically is DEFINITELY MAYBE -- that is on this theme. Some physicists are trying to finish a theory and are constantly thwarted by good and bad luck. They realize that the universe impedes understanding of this kind, and try to figure out how they might work around it. I liked it very much.
