Hey, everybody!

The SciFi and Fantasy Portal in Second Life is hosting this event on
Saturday. Time listed below is Pacific Time. The event will take place at 4
pm Eastern time.

Hope some of you will check this out. A virtual reality discussion about a
Star Trek episode about virtual reality is pretty darn cool, and pretty darn
science fiction-y! Don't miss it!

On Saturday, March 27, at 1pm SLT, Sally Caves (SL "Hypatia Pickens") will
talk at the Sci Fi and Fantasy Portal about her experiences writing for the
popular TV show Star Trek: The Next Generation._

Her episode, "Hollow Pursuits," aired on April 30, 1990, and starred Dwight
Schultz as Lt. Reginald Barclay, a Federation rookie addicted to the
"holodeck" -- the immersive virtual reality of the 24th century. Sally
finds it ironic that twenty years later she is herself "addicted" to Second
Life.

BRIEF STORY SUMMARY:

Barclay, given to disabling nervousness and timidity, has trouble dealing
with his fellow officers and escapes into a virtual world where he recreates
Troi, Riker, Picard, and others in various comic scenarios. In the meantime,
though, he is neglecting his duties, and when a mysterious substance starts
to change the molecular structure of things on the ship, his help is
urgently needed. What kind of crisis will bring him out of his retreat from
the real? How do his fellow crewmembers react to their parodies?

Poet, artist, fiction writer and educator, Sally will talk about the
portrayal of media addiction then and now, and how the episode foreshadowed
some of the fears expressed today about Second Life, but also the creative
opportunities showcased in both that imagined Virtual Reality and this one
we know and love.
