I'm an extensive user of FB, but I agree that these email threads have more value (for me) than fb discussions. Some of the messages here are lengthy, thoughtful expressions of ideas often interwoven as responses to previous posts. On facebook, a person would have to keep clicking on "see more" to read a lengthy wall post and the responses pile up chronologically. That doesn't work for me in this instance. I prefer email.
Having said that, there is no reason that those who prefer facebook can't go over there and start discussions as well. Just keep in mind that you will not reach the same audience.
