Will McIntosh's "Bridesicle" emerged as the clear favorite in last
night's R-SPEC Hugo short story vote, although we had a terrific
discussion about what "Spar" was all about, whether or not it
constituted a story, and how expectations based on an author's
previous works can influence the reader. Some of the most spirited
discussion came though, when we dove into what we're reading now. We
ended up talking about alcoholism and abuse in Nordic cultures and
works, and tracing the history of vampire fiction, decade by decade,
looking particularly at its enduring appeal yet varying audiences. We
also talked about how some subcultures, like goth and punk, tend to
exclude those that are too widely recognized as typical, or too widely
publicized. We dug into the news on the latest television and web
shows - Fast Forward, Ark, and others, and discussed the cultural
contribution of DinoCroc vs. SuperGator ;-).
In R-SPEC news, orders for 2034: Writing Rochester's Futures continue
to come in downstream of this past weekend's launch, including one
book sold to a local suburban school district. We've sold almost two-
thirds of our book stock now.
Hoping they order the book for their classes,
Alicia
