You could design a process in which a single email, containing both the ranking and a short essay, is sent to some neutral observer(s) not on the SC. (At least one person has volunteered to serve as a neutral observer.) The neutral observer(s) could then send only the essays to the SC, which could exercise its judgement upon the essays in ignorance of the essay writers' votes.
