If English words were the only thing that symbols were used to represent, you might be right. John Cowan has just given you an counter example from German. Another is my own use of symbols to refer to variables and functions in mathematical notation, which are distinguished by orthography and case (and more). The R6RS allows me to write clearer portable code than the R5RS, because I can use and distinguish b and B and λ and Λ.
