No one reason was needed.  It's more like the reason the English House
of Commons passed the (temporary) abolition of bishops in the Church of
England back in 1641: as Lord Falkland said, "They who hated bishops,
hated them worse than the Devil; and they who loved them, did not love
them so well as their dinner."
