Sure.  But it's easy to layer such things over binary ports, without
turning the binary ports into R5RS textual ports.  And we can't get rid
of those, because IEEE Scheme has them.

The alternative is to make binary ports and text ports *completely*
disjoint, with the consequential duplication of all the procedures for
managing them.
