The Page_part_types does exactly what you ask for and what most of what is talked about in the link you sent.
I am using it on 2 sites for a good few months now with no problems.

I think this is not the way radiant is going to at the moment and this will probably wont work with future versions of radiant (still does with the current), if someone knows on how to do it in implementations like the mental branch, I'ld to hear your ideas, and implement them

I'd like to do pretty much with custom fields that was
discussed in the thread from the mailing list above,
and it looks like there were some ideas put forth, but
I don't see specifically a decision being made. I'm
tempted to work on hacking something together for
myself, but don't want to reinvent the wheel and
curious how others may have solved this problem or if
there is a plan to add this functionality.
