If there are that many b/g access points around you, I'll bet some of
them are increasing the interference by setting themselves to channels
other than 1, 6, 12 -- the only non-overlapping channels in the 2.4Ghz
unregulated band.

Suggest you tell the Apple access point (through it's really stupid,
non-browser client) to broadcast on channel 1 in the hope that your SB
Radio will connect first to it instead of drifting between channels on
overlapping ap's. Alternatively, if you do a site survey and most of the
aps' are on low channels, you can set your to 12.
