Most hotels have a portal login regardless of cost. They usually do this
to limit the number of consecutive days the same MAC connects to the
network so nearby residents don't get free internet.

Also, if you setup an ad-hoc network that won't work. You would need to
setup the network in infrastructure mode to allow internet sharing. Most
hotels that offer wireless usually have a physical ethernet jack you
could use. In this case I have used a portable wireless access point to
connect multiple devices to a single access point without using the
portal or paying for multiple accounts.
