I decided to put in a tech support query on this, and support came back with the following:
"I understand your concern, here is the list of Audio formats that is supported by the Squeezebox Radio:MP3, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, Apple Lossless. Other formats supported through transcoding and some formats may require additional software installation. I do suggest you can try to convert the .m4a to the compatible audio formats." They'd previously published that .m4a was allowable, but have since backed off of this.
