Well I finally got this working. It worked temporarily with the method
described above but it was not very reliable and it was a pain having
all these things running on my PC.

But I got it working this week as follows:

I have another "lifehacker" style thing I like to do which is have all
the TV shows I watch show up in my Google Calendar. The solution I
found is documented here, and I've been using it for a while:

http://www.myepisodes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=280

This takes an RSS feed from www.myepisodes.com and converts it in to a
iCal calendar which you can add to Google Calendar.

Whilst tinkering with it the other day, I thought that I may be able to
use it to solve the "podcast as alarm" problem. Using SimplePie RSS and
a bit of my own code (mainly written by lots of googling) it didn't
actually take me too long to implement a solution.

For example,

http://www.jamesking.co.uk/fw/GenericTest.php?feedname=http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/series/footballweekly/podcast.xml
redirects to the latest MP3 file from The Guardian's (British newspaper)
"Football Weekly" podcast. It's easy to do similar for other podcasts,
just replace the podcast URL at the end (starting with HTTP) with
another podcast RSS feed.

I hope someone (else!) finds this useful, I am loving it. It's great
to be able to wake up to different podcasts on different days of the
week by using the alarm function.
