Thanks to Joe and sepb for their feedback. Unfortunately I received (and installed) 2 updates, which were a few days apart. Both had these new problems, so I can't go back now - from what I understand.
My main issue is that each update should improve the software, not degrade it seriously. So while I understand there is the option to go back a version, it really shouldn't be necessary. I guess I'll have to live with it for now and hope a new update comes along that fixes it all.
