Good News, I think I have solved it. I now appear to have internet radio and music both via LMS on the readynas.
I finally tracked it down by discovering that a basic wget from unix prompt was opening a connection to the web but failing to fet any pages. So I abandonded looking for a solution to do with LMS and instead started googling for wget problems on readnas. I found this thread http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=42900&start=15 which suggested the issue was to to with the network MTU setting being too high. Mine was set at 7936 (Jumbo Frames for max LAN throughput). I set it to 1450, rebooted the NAS and it seems to be working so far.
