My comment was based on my experience as a domestic electrician. Some of
the jobs I get asked to but have to turn down because they're just not
worth doing even if charged less than my normal hourly rate.

For me the cost of the "look at it and tell you its shagged" part could
be off set against getting a cheap soldering iron and multimeter. I've
got decent kit because I do use it on paying jobs, I'm an electrician
but I do make my own LED strip lighting setups to fit in customers
kitchens and the like but it's amazing what you can do with inexpensive
tools.

I'm all for saving equipment that's perfectly usable and arguably
superior to current stuff so good luck rescuing it.
