Lots of issues here. The sound change is very weird, I can't think of a reason why a codec would cause that, and it really sounds like a failing DAC/amp/speaker in the radio to me. Perhaps it's just a coincidence that it's so far only happened on the SB software not the UE software? Don't know. First things first on this one though is to double check the PSU. Lots of weirdos can be caused by bad PSUs.
Apps, weve dealt with - the Logitech squeezebox app won't work with recent android versions, squeezer can't operate a UE device, only a SB one. In UE mode you need to use the Logitech UE app, that is all. If it doesn't connect look at the WiFi settings and make sure you haven't ticked "WiFi privacy" or whatever your brand of router calls it. The two WiFi devices must not be prevented from talking to each other (and your app needs to talk to either MySB.com or your local Logitech media server installation, depending on which one you are relying on).
