I got Pandora working reliably again by:

  
- installing the latest Squeezebox software update
- uninstalling and reinstalling the Pandora app
- resetting the Squeezebox to its factory settings
  

Whether all of these steps were necessary or I could have gotten away
with only the last, I don't know. As it turns out, restoring the factory
settings did not lose any of my apps or favorites, so if it starts
messing up again I'll try that first.
