I'm using windows xp pro, Aparently the spaces are getting there because as you said if i backspace, something is being deleted because the line prior to the one with the tabs on it isn't removed right away. It must be the gui isn't updating.
This behavior also shows up on css files, however not on html, or js (haven't tested much more than that)

How does this manifest? I had WEIRD errors in my view code due to
HIDDEN tabs! Clearly the error messages showed that there was free
space e.g. in between my method(call) names. It took me quite a while
to find out that there were hidden tab characters in my rhtml file,
that I had to delete. Actually I stumbled over this by accident as I
was hitting backspace with no apparent effect, hitting backspace twice
then "really" removed the previous character.
Did you experience similar problems?
