Hey Chris There's still hope of meeting ppl face to face: Though not ideal, there's an occasional Byron Bay meetup... not sure how often, or if they're still meeting at all, but maybe someone from there can tell us.
We have folks driving up from Canberra for the Sydney meets, so that distance is doable I guess :) Other than that there's #roro on freenode & this list. The next Oceanic meetup is railscamp 8 in Perth later in the year -- well worth the effort of attending. Apart from that, I'd suggest getting a github account and showing off your chops that way.
